Interdisciplinary Conference on
The Refugee Crisis in the Mediterranean: Political, Economic, and Social Perspectives

Technical University Berlin, Campus El Gouna, EgyptIn the framework of the Volkswagen foundation research project “Violence, Flight, and Socio- Economic Behavior, the Institute of Law and Economics, University of Hamburg, Germany in cooperation with the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University, Egypt are glad to announce the call for application for the interdisciplinary conference “The Refugee Crisis inthe Mediterranean: Political, Economic, and Social Perspectives” which will be held in El Gouna, Egypt on October 8th - 9th 2019 at the TU Berlin Campus El Gouna.

The conference is jointly organized with the department of Urban Development, TU Berlin- Campus El Gouna. The topic of this year’s conference pertains to the consequences of the Mediterranean refugee crisis.

The conference committee invites submissions of papers (in English only; either complete or work in progress)using behavioral, experimental, and theoretical approaches addressing questions related to the topic. Papers could address the impacts of the refugee crises in the Mediterranean on the individual level (experiences of refugees, the effect on their values, attitudes and trauma), on the city urban level (how this affects the urban structure/performance of a neighborhood/district/city), on the country level (attitudes in hosting countries, the reaction of political actors, economic and societal consequences), or on the regional level (regional efforts to tackle the problem, success or breakdown of collective efforts, their causes and consequences). Papers focusing on the cultural aspects of integration and integration law are also welcome. Although the topic of the conference is the refugee crisis unfolding in the Mediterranean, papers using economic experiments in the MENA region will be considered as well. The language of the conference is English.

Scholars interested in participating should send an abstract and a short CV until 20th May 2019 to: nora.elbialy@uni-hamburg.de. Decisions will be announced before the end of June 2019. Full papers should be sent to the organizing committee by August 30th 2019 so as to give enough time for reviewing the papers.

Fees and Accommodation:
The conference will cover accommodation, flight, and conference fees for selected speakers. The conference fee is 60,-Euro for students and 80,-Euro for nonstudents. There will be a free transfer service for all participants from Cairo to El Gouna and back.
